Neighborhood Forum #1 Summary
We had a very successful Neighborhood Relations Forum!
We identified three main topics that we want to focus on, then brainstormed on how we can improve under those topics.
Here's a summary of our ideas:
Garbage
Students commonly litter on Grant as well as neighbor's property.
- We decided we need to create a change in the overall culture and mentality our students have towards littering.
- Begin a no trash campaign (Pictures, signs that explain the more you litter the less likely we are to have lights on our field)
- Neighborhood Clean-Up Event
- Once a week have a campus walk where students pick up trash
- If we were to add garbage cans, they would have to be heavy (concrete) as not to be flipped over
- However, we think there isn't a need for more garbage cans- what's necessary is a mentality that it's actually worth it to walk across the street throw your trash away in the surrounding trash bins
- Create incentives that would encourage students not to litter (Prizes, rewards, more respect for the school)
Traffic Congestion
At the start of each school day, traffic in front of and around the school is moving in different directions, and there is little order or direction, resulting in a longer wait for students and unnecessary traffic for neighbors.
- Educating people, and directing people on routes to go about their drop-off routine was our overbearing theme for this topic. We also talked about taking more major steps such as construction and public transportation.
- We could encourage drop offs across from the park- letting people know that walking a few feet across the park is just as quick and much more efficient than piling in front of school
- Discourage stalling cars or idling
- Direct the flow of traffic so that there is only one route around the school moving in one direction
- Encourage biking to school
- Public Transportation:
- Create more buses and bus stops by Grant
- Make a max stop closer to the school
- Add a new shuttle that connects to a larger parking lot. One could run from Fred Meyer's to the school, so students can park using their lot, then easily transport themselves over.
- Construction Ideas:
- Build better bike parking
- Build Parking Lot
Lack of Communication Between GHS and Surrounding Community
Unless there is a large banner outside the school, it's really hard for neighbors to know about any upcoming events at the school, especially if they don't have children attending. Improving communication with the neighbors would be greatly benificial to us both: More of the community would get a chance to see all of the amazing events Grant has to offer, and it would improve the reputation Grant has even more, as well as bring more money to our school.
- Under this problem, we focused on updating the community on the happenings and achievements of our school through different forms of media that are more easily accessible. We also discussed holding different community events, such as the Neighborhood Relations Committee Meetings, to give the students and neighborhood a change to mingle and bond.
- Host a pot luck, barbecue, food cart festival
- Ice cream Social
- Make subscriptions to the Grant Magazine cheaper, and more readily available
- Create a separate email list that updates neighbors on school events
- Make a farmer's market table with information about Grant, and an email sign-up opportunity
- Have a regular column written in the Grant Park Newsletter and or Hollywood Star.
- These regular columns can be easily cut out and hung places like the fridge
- Provide Grant Magazines, or newsletter updates, in the Hollywood Library
We are also going to work on communication with other Grant related groups, such as the Grant Alumni, Hollywood Boosters, and PTA.
The ideas were wonderful- we would love to hear more! Please submit and ideas on this blog!
Thank you!
